Gamma-Ray Bursts and Topology of the Universe

چکیده

In this letter we propose a physical explanation for recently reported correlations between pairs of close and antipodal gamma-ray bursts from publicly available BATSE catalogue. Our model is based on the cosmological scenario in which bursters are located at cosmological distances of order of 0.5–2 Gpc. Observed distribution of gamma-ray bursts strongly suports this assumption. If so gamma-ray bursts may provide a very good probe for investigating the topological structure of the Universe. We notice that correlation between antipodal events may in fact indicate that we live in the so called Ellis’ small universe which has FriedmanRoberston-Walker metric structure and nontrivial topology.

Gamma-ray Bursts and Their Central Engines

Gamma-ray bursts are the most luminous and probably the most relativistic events in the universe. The last few years have seen a tremendous increase in our knowledge of these events, but the source of the bursts still remains elusive. I will summarise recent progress in this field with special emphasis on our understanding of the possible progenitor systems.

Gamma-Ray Bursts: Jets and Energetics

The relativistic outflows from gamma-ray bursts are now thought to be narrowly collimated into jets. After correcting for this jet geometry there is a remarkable constancy of both the energy radiated by the burst and the kinetic energy carried by the outflow. Gamma-ray bursts are still the most luminous explosions in the Universe, but they release energies that are comparable to supernovae. The...

Dominant gamma-ray bursts production in the early universe

It has been known that at least some of the observed gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced at cosmological distances and the GRB production rate may follow the star formation rate. We model the BATSE detected intensity distribution of long GRBs in order to determine their space density distribution and opening angle distribution. Our main results are: the lower and upper distance limits to the G...

Gamma-ray bursts and cosmology.

I review the current status of the use of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) as probes of the early Universe and cosmology. I describe the promise of long GRBs as probes of the high redshift (z>4) and very high redshift (z>5) Universe, and several key scientific results that have come from observations made possible by accurate, rapid localizations of these bursts by Swift. I then estimate the fraction of...

Gamma-ray bursts and their links with supernovae and cosmology

Gamma-ray bursts are the most luminous explosions in the Universe, whose origin and mechanism are the focus of intense interest. They appear connected to supernova remnants from massive stars or the merger of their remnants, and their brightness makes them temporarily detectable out to the largest distances yet explored in the universe. After pioneering breakthroughs from space and ground exper...
